UK cannot afford to lose its EU health and social care workforce

27 February 2018

The Cavendish Coalition has warned the UK cannot afford to lose its EU health and social care workforce following Brexit.

The health and social care group’s comments follow an immigration report by the Home Affairs Committee, which criticises the continued uncertainty over EU nationals’ status in the UK.

Cavendish Coalition co-convenor, Nadra Ahmed, told the National Health Executive: “This report highlights the huge challenges faced by UK employers in securing their current and future workforce during a period of great uncertainty. The health and social care system remains under intolerable pressure and so we simply cannot afford to lose the talented EU staff we currently employ. Nadra welcomed confirmation that EU citizens’ rights will continue to be protected following Brexit but said more detail was now needed.
“Employers and staff urgently require clarity on the next steps – not just for those who are currently in the UK, but for those who arrive during the transition period and beyond,” she added. “The Cavendish Coalition remains ready and willing to support the government during this critical phase of negotiations.”

Around 90,000 EU workers are currently employed in the care sector.
