Leading Change Adding Value E-Learning Tools

26 March 2018

Message sent on behalf of Susan Aitkenhead, Director of Nursing, Professional Development, NHS England and Liz Fenton, Deputy Chief Nurse, Health Education England

"We are delighted to highlight that the first Leading Change, Adding Value (LCAV) e-learning tool, developed and delivered by Health Education England, NHS England and LCAV partners, working alongside HEE e-Learning for Healthcare has been published today.

The aim of the tool is to help explain and de-mystify the approach to identifying and addressing unwarranted variation in practice and support staff to deliver the Triple Aim outcomes of better outcomes, better experience and better use of resources.

We would propose that this will be particularly useful for all colleagues wherever they work and in whatever role, to help support their understanding of the framework and how to apply the principles and methodology to their practice.

As you may already be aware LCAV asks that we apply the same importance to ‘quantifying’ and ‘measuring’ the outcomes of our work, as we do to demonstrating the quality and compassion that nursing, midwifery and care staff are already recognised for.

Applying both together should not be mutually exclusive and LCAV explains how nursing, midwifery and care staff can lead in identifying and addressing what needs to change or could be changed to improve services, experiences and outcomes for patients, individuals and populations.

The e-learning tool aims to provide an opportunity to build, or strengthen current knowledge and skills in the understanding of the impact of this ‘unwarranted variation’ on individuals and populations and then help lead the change required to address this.

Launched today, the e-learning tool can be accessed here. However, having received previous feedback from care sector colleagues, that many nursing, midwifery and care staff do not always have easy access to online resources, we have also ensured that a pdf version is available and will be distributed over the coming weeks. The e-learning session should take approximately 20-25 minutes to complete. We would ask that you encourage colleagues to access the e-learning tool and find out more about LCAV.

If you would like further information about the e-learning tool, please visit the e-LfH module or contact us via the LCAV email address at where we are also happy to take any other queries on the LCAV implementation programme.

Finally, a link to a co-authored blog is available here.

Thank you for your support.

Kind Regards

Susan Aitkenhead – Director of Nursing, Professional Development, NHS England

Liz Fenton – Deputy Chief Nurse, Health Education England
